Stoker Ostler Wealth Advisors Supports Finding a Cure
Megan Groom of Stoker Ostler Wealth Advisors Participates in the Breast Cancer 3-Day in Arizona
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (October 22, 2007)…For Megan Groom, a little inspiration and a good pair of tennis shoes can go a long way, literally. After realizing just how many people are affected by breast cancer, Groom made a commitment to do whatever she could to support finding a cure for breast cancer. She will travel to Arizona later this month to participate in the Breast Cancer 3-Day, benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure, where she will walk 60 miles to raise awareness.
Groom, a Salt Lake City, Utah resident, mother and investment assistant at Stoker Ostler Wealth Advisors for nearly 8 years, felt it her duty to do something bold about breast cancer. So much so that she is traveling out of state, living with aching feet and taking time away from her family to train and fundraise.
“I was shocked when I realized that 1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and what a high risk every woman faces. I took on this challenge for my daughter, Andreya, because I want her to know that I am doing all I can to help women live their lives to their full potential. It is the very least I can do to show her that I am fighting for a better world for all women,” she said.
Groom began preparing last May and her weekly training regime includes four days of walking up to 44 miles, along with two days of cross-training. To date, Groom has walked over 500 miles and gone through 2 pairs of shoes. However, Utah’s great weather during the summer months along with beautiful outdoor trails made training more enjoyable.
“When the weather was good, we would walk the passway along the Jordan River that seems to go on forever. The atmosphere is beautiful and it was nice to have a change of scenery mile after mile.”
Groom helped form a group that has raised nearly $14,000, in honor of a friend who has battled breast cancer. She has taken an active approach to fundraising and is surprised at the overwhelming response.
“My daughter and I set up a lemonade stand in a local grocery store as one way to raise money and met 12 breast cancer survivors. It was amazing to see and hear how many people this disease really affects.”
In addition, Groom has received an abundance of support from her employer, Stoker Ostler Wealth Advisors, which has offices in Scottsdale, Ariz. and Salt Lake City. She is grateful for their encouragement.
“Phil Stoker and Creg Ostler have been very compassionate and have generously donated to my fundraising efforts. In addition, many of my other co-workers showed their support through personal donations. Their encouragement is awesome and I am so honored to work with such kind people.”
Groom hopes that her dedication and commitment to finding a cure will encourage others to do what they can to help.
“My goal is to help other women realize the importance of education and that doing your self-examinations on a regular basis can save your life, early detection is the key. Through this whole process, it has been my aspiration to experience as much as I can, hear as many stories as I can and meet as many people as I can. So far, this has been the most unforgettable challenge of my life!”
